The Silenced Pistol (Silencer internally) is an uncommon firearm in Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. In both games the silenced pistol is a semi-automatic pistol, with slow fire rate and decent accuracy that has the ability to not alert nearby enemies when used.
Statistics[]
In Hotline Miami, the silenced pistol is weak requiring at 2-3 shots and can sometimes even knock down enemies instead of killing them, this can result in the shot enemies being alerted to the player's presence, this functionality can also be paired with the yellow plaster walls found in some levels (such as Overdose) which do not block bullets; giving the player additional time to deal with alerted enemies. The silenced pistol is rare, and can only be found on Mobsters in Deadline but can also be unlocked for random weapon spawns where it is the last weapon unlocked. The silenced pistol is also one of the few guns that Jacket can use his human shield ability with.
The silenced pistol is a very situational weapon, whilst it can deal with distant enemies it struggles in close quarters combat - especially against Thugs due to it's middling damage. The best way to deal with Thugs is to use a "shoot and hide" approach; shooting them and then running away so they can lose visual on the player then bleed out and die. Otherwise, due to the game's focus on fast-paced gameplay it's better to abandon it for a more suitable, powerful gun such as the M16, Magnum or Shotgun.
In Wrong Number the silenced pistol has had it's ammunition reduced to 12 from 13, but like all returning guns the silenced pistol now always kill standard enemies in one shot, and no longer have the potential to knock them out either (though enemies require 2 shots to kill the player) additionally the silenced pistol does not have reduced accuracy like the other returning guns. The silenced pistol has also had it's availability increased, silenced pistol mobsters are now much more common throughout levels, and the Colombians also utilize it has a main weapon in their levels. These factors combined makes the silenced pistol far more useful, and less situational.
The Henchman starts with a Silenced Pistol in No Mercy. Additionally the achievement ASSASSIN'S CRED can be accomplished by killing all 12 Gang Members with the Silenced Pistol in No Mercy. Richter also has the fastest Silenced Pistol fire rate - likely due to his official levels not featuring the Silenced Uzi due to balancing issues. Manny Pardo can also execute enemies with the Silenced Pistol.
In Hard Mode (like all guns) the Silenced Pistol's ammunition is halved every time it is dropped and picked up; meaning an unfired enemy Silenced Pistol will always have 7 rounds instead of 12. This does not affect the Henchman's starting pistol in No Mercy.
Trivia[]
- The Silenced Pistol in Wrong Number reuses the same sound as the Silenced Pistol from the Cocaine Cowboy Prototype, likely due to the more punchy sound providing better feedback.
- The sound is perhaps best known as the silenced gunshot from the Counter-Strike series.
- In both games, the silenced pistol is based on the Berretta M92FS fitted with a suppressor.
- The VHS cover for No Mercy however depicts the M1911A1, this can be told by it's exposed hammer, grey metal finish and large back iron sight.
- Almost all characters and enemies in Wrong Number hold the Silenced Pistol sideways (aka Gangster style) - including Jacket; the only exception being the Mobsters who still hold them upright, due to the Mobsters in Wrong Number mostly reusing their common sprite assets from the original game.
- Strangely, the silenced pistol will still alert enemies if used to execute a knocked out enemy as Manny Pardo.
