The Russian Mafia (Russian: Русская мафия), also known as the Lebedev Bratva, is an enemy faction in the Hotline Miami series.

History[]

The Russian Mafia, often reffered to as the Bratva (Brotherhood) or Organizatsiya (Organization), is a loose term referring a number of organized crime syndicates originating in Russia. Structures and traditions in the Russian Mafia can vary wildly from syndicate to syndicate, but are typically divided into a similar basic hierarchy - the Pakhan (Godfather) is the head of the syndicate, along with various lieutenants and high-ranking soldiers known as Avtoritets (Brigadeers). Below them are the Boeviks (Warriors) who act as low-ranking muscle, and Shestyorka (Associates) who do errands and odd jobs.

The syndicate depicted in the Hotline Miami series is highly structured and militarized, possessing significant power and influence in the criminal underworld of Miami, Florida. Not much information is available regarding the syndicate's history prior to the spring of 1989, but it's formation was likely caused by an influx of Russian immigrants in the United States during the Great Depression, as a result of the Russo-American Coalition. By 1989, the Russian Mafia had become an ally of the Colombian Cartel and the largest organized crime syndicate in Miami.

Events of Hotline Miami[]

The Russian Mafia is the primary target of 50 Blessings in the events of Hotline Miami. 50 Blessings incites numerous massacres of members and affiliates of the Russian Mafia via cryptic answering machine messages sent to selected subscribers of their newsletter. The messages provide the recipients with addresses housing operations of the Russian Mafia. On the 3rd of April 1989, one of the first individuals contacted, Jacket, is instructed to retrieve a briefcase from Brickell Metro Station. Jacket continues to receive messages over the following months, and continues to carry out murders of Russian mobsters. On April 25th, 1989, he kills a film producer associated with the Russian Mafia, and rescues a drugged and crying girl from his home. On May 13, 1989, Jacket assassinates several politicians involved in the Russo-American Coalition, and a number of Russian mobsters. Jacket drives to the Golden Truck Stop, a nightclub owned by the Russian Mafia, on June 23rd, 1989 and kills everyone inside. After finding the manager, he tracks the location of the Russian Mafia's leader. Jacket kills the current boss, as well as the previous boss. The events of Hotline Miami severely weakened the Russian Mafia, after Jacket destroyed the majority of its' operations and killed it's patriarch.

Events of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number[]

The Russian Mafia is also present in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. In 1989 (simultaneous with the events of the first game) 50 Blessings targets the Russian Mafia by recruiting Jake and Richter to kill their members and associated. Locations include a news station they're either bribing or receiving payment from, a meth lab, a USSR flag waving bar, an abandoned building serving as a stash house for black market weapons imported from the USSR, and a luxury condo full of sports and exercise equipment.

In late 1991, the son of the former leader of the Russian Mafia, who has inherited his father's position, decides to begin a war with the Colombian Cartel in order to reclaim the Russian Mafia's former territory that the Colombians assumed control over after the events of Hotline Miami. The Son sends The Henchman to clear a formerly allied gang, now allied with the Colombians. The Son agrees to allow The Henchman to quit working for the Russian Mafia after this job. However, The Fans find the henchman (who is under the influence of the new product), kill him and take his phone. The Son calls to ask if The Henchman wants to return to the Mafia, and discloses the address of their new headquarters. When he gets no response, he hangs up, unaware that he has just told The Fans exactly where to find them. Meanwhile, The Son overdoses on the new product and begins a drug-induced killing spree, murdering many of his own men and all The Fans (except Tony). After killing The Fans, The Son walks off the of the top floor of the building (thinking it to be a rainbow bridge) and falls to his death. It is presumed that the rest of the Russian Mafia in Miami are killed when Miami becomes the target of a nuclear attack.
