The Hawaiian conflict is a theater of the Soviet-American War, a conflict in the 1980's between USA and Soviet Union portrayed in the Hotline Miami universe.
The causes, its beginning or its accurate end are unknown, but some of the events are shown or referred to in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number.
Events[]
How and why the war broke out is never mentioned, however the two countries are believed to be have been locked in a cold war prior to the conflict. During the course of the war, the Soviet Union invades the US islands in the Pacific, causing US forces to be sent in and try to force the Soviets out of their territory. Dialogue strongly suggests that by 1985, the United States is losing the war and that the Soviet Union will likely win. The Colonel's special forces unit (the Ghost Wolves, whose members include Beard and Jacket) were a famed unit during the war, using guerilla warfare tactics to sabotage Soviet-held strongholds and facilities. They attacked a camp in the jungle on March 17th, 1985, an abandoned resort hotel used as a base on October 25th, 1985 and finally a power plant on October 30th, 1985.
The assault on the power plant ends with the deaths of half of the Ghost Wolves team and the withdrawal of Beard together with an injured Jacket.
On April 3rd, 1986, unknown events cause a nuclear confrontation between the superpowers: San Francisco is nuked and Beard, who had recently opened a convenience store there, is among the victims.
Aftermath[]
After this conflict there was a truce and many peace and reconciliation conferences were held following the incident. On December 28th, 1991, one of these diplomatic meetings is brutally interrupted when a group of armed men under the Colonel (now a General) attempt to stage a coup. In the ensuing chaos both American and Soviet presidents are killed. This incident ignites a restart of the conflict and escalation to a global nuclear conflict.
Trivia[]
- No references to the fall of the Berlin wall or the dissolution of the Soviet Union are seen (in the comic, Kyiv, Ukraine is still part of the Soviet Union), so most likely all the socialist bloc establishments and the Warsaw Pact are still intact in the '90s. Many Americans are angry at the federal government and support ultra-nationalist organizations like 50 Blessings. Intolerance against strangers and particularly against immigrants from the Soviet Union is widespread, because the latter are still seen as enemies. Violent nationalist demonstrations and violence against Soviet citizens and immigrants are referred to in-game by newspapers.
- There is also no reference to the Afghanistan War, suggesting that the war may have never happened, the invasion of Hawaii takes place instead.
- There is neither any mention of NATO or whether either side had any allies during the war.
- The Father has many belongings with a Hawaiian Conflict origin, panthers and military-grade weapons for example.
