Alex Davis, also known as Swan #1, is a playable protaganist in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. She is a member of The Fans who is part of an inseparable duo known as the Swans with her twin brother Ash Davis, making them the third playable Fans. They are unlocked following Corey and Tony for the scene Execution.

Donning a #1 swan mask, Alex wields a chainsaw and wears green football padding as body armor, dark green pants, orange fingerless gloves and shoulder pads, and an orange backpack.

Events in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number[]

1985[]

Alex was a US soldier stationed in Hawaii during the Soviet-American War with her brother and the other Fans (Corey, Tony, and Mark). On March 17th, Alex smokes a cigarette facing away from the bar, while Ash tinkers with a radio next to her. As their commander is interviewed outside by the journalist Evan Wright, Tony drinks beer on the opposite end from Alex while Corey and Mark are separated from the Swans by a cash register.

Late October, November 1991[]

On October 31st, Alex is first seen at the Fans' Halloween party. She is the first of the Fans that the player takes control of, making her the only Fan standing. Alex is also the only Fan who does not have dialogue in this scene. Tony and Ash's discontent with the party leads to Mark proposing that the Fans go for a ride, much to Ash's excitement. The Fans enter a mafia-controlled electronics workshop and kill everyone in the building.

On November 5th, Alex and Ash protest with signs outside of the courthouse holding Jacket's trial, suggesting that the siblings are the most concerned with freeing Jacket and may be the most politically active of the Fans. Unlike Ash, Alex steadies her sign with only one hand.

On November 11th, Alex appears in the Hank's bar easter egg. The Fans sit around a table filled with bottles. Again, Alex is the only Fan standing as she clutches her left hand on Ash's right shoulder, who is uncharacteristically hard-drinking in this scene.

On November 22nd or soon after, Ash tells the Fans that his acquaintance Andy informed him about a Russian Henchman's location, directing them to their next killing spree. After clearing the floor, the Swans, Corey, and Mark surround the intoxicated Henchman sitting in an empty room. Ash drags the Henchman from the couch onto the floor and Corey bashes him in the head, possibly intending to execute him with one hit. However, the Henchman continues rambling, prompting Alex to repeatedly stomp on his crotch while Mark and Corey proceed beating the Henchman to death.

December 1991[]

On December 2nd, Alex stands against the wall rolling a blunt across from Corey and the other Fans. Her brother suggests a new job from his friend Jack to help bring home his sister, who has been missing for several weeks. Tony argues that the Fans are now doing "house calls", but Alex exclaims that she "sure as hell ain't staying" and Tony reluctantly agrees he will come along. The Fans kill the "junkies and lowlifes" but leave Jack's horrified sister behind, who threatened the Fan to leave her alone after watching them murder her "friends".

On December 9th, Alex views several blueprints on a circular table spray painted with the 50 Blessing's symbol along with Corey and Tony. Mark asks if they noticed that their killing spree on December 2nd was publicized in the news the night before. Alex excitedly asks if she should call the news station for a copy as she missed the broadcast, exclaiming that she would pay "big bucks to see it!" Tony sardonically suggests that Alex may as well turn herself in to the police. With the Fans realizing that more killing is needed to maintain their publicity, Alex suggests that they raid a storage shed near some "creepy" dealers she purchased weed from on 168th street. Tony criticizes her for wanting the Fans to go "treasure hunting" for more of Alex's drugs, which she retorts with, "Well, there might be more assholes there. I don't know. You got anything better to do?" Optimistic, Mark is the first to agree with Alex's plan and starts the van. Although disappointed by the first floor, the Fans discover an eerie underground hideout filled with mobsters and their deceased victims in the sewers.

On December 10th, the morning after finding the Pit, Alex is bathing at home when Detective Pardo knocks on the door. She tells Pardo to wait as she gets dressed, and quickly hides her Swan outfit under the bed. Alex is displeased to find Pardo in the dining room (where he is planting a wallet unseen to her), who entered without her permission after claiming that the door was unlocked. Pardo asserts that he is looking for "Ash Davis", and Alex replies that she is unaware of her brother's whereabouts since he moved out. He tells her to have Ash contact the Miami Police Department, and comments that Alex "got the good genes" and is "very pretty". Alex tells him to leave.

AlexUnmasked

Alex without her mask on.

On December 20th, the intro begins with a dream sequence foreshadowing the events of Death Wish with Mark bringing in a box of Richard masks, hinting that Alex, Tony, and Corey sense they are about to commit a dire mistake. Alex is the last Fan to wear the mask after Corey and Tony (as Mark and Ash already have their regular masks on), and is also the last to use the walkie talkie by saying, "Alright, we're on the roof now! How are things going for you, guys? [...] Hello? [...] Is anyone there? [...] Guys?[...]" The dream sequence is disrupted by a ringing phone, and the player takes control of Alex to discover that none of the phones in the Fans' hideout are ringing. Ash realizes that the cell he took from the Henchman in Execution is the one receiving a call. He listens to the Son brag about the Russian Mafia's success and invites his former employee to join them at their building on 20th street, being unaware of the Henchman's death. Thrilled, Ash tells the Fans to follow him to the van for their next job.

After Corey's two hour stakeout and Ash opens the security door, the Swans charge first into the building. Their floor is the most populated in Death Wish and contains the most electronics and computers. After finishing their level, they head to the rooftop as the Fans had planned to jump to the next building. Ash radios the Fans, repeating Alex's line from earlier in the dream sequence, "Alright, we're on the roof now! How are things going for you, guys? [...] Hello? [...] Is anyone there? Guys? [...]" Alex wonders if they should check on the other Fans, and Ash replies that perhaps they should when The Son emerges on to the roof. As they turn to face him, Ash is immediately shot to death by the Son. Shouting Ash's name, Alex faces the hysterical Son and yells, "What the fuck are you waiting fo-" and is shot by the Son.

In Apocalypse, the Swans are the fourth and final boss on the rooftop for the Son after defeating Mark, Corey, and Tony (who survived). In his hallucinogenic state, the Son perceives the twins as as two swans colliding to form a two-headed swan monster that attacks him, even though he immediately shot Ash and Alex upon encountering them.

In The Table Sequence, Alex and the Fans are seated at a table with Richard, Richter, Jake, Evan, the Son, the Henchman, and Beard. Alex is the only member standing in the room, clutching Ash's chair from behind with her left hand. After Tony replies to Richard, "I think I've heard enough. [...] Hey guys, let's get out of here," the scene flashes with each of the Fans being replaced by their corpses, depicting Alex's body with 3 gunshot wounds to the chest. Like the other Fans, Alex has no dialogue during this scene (except for Tony).

Playstyle[]

With "Chainsaw & Guns", Alex and Ash are the only playable duo in the game series. Alex exclusively deals melee damage using a chainsaw while walking several steps in front of Ash, who exclusively deals ranged attacks with firearms. Both characters' move in tandem facing the same direction and cannot be separated from each other at any point in the level.

Alex can kill larger enemies like Thugs with her chainsaw, similar to Tony's melee ability. There are several challenges to Alex's playstyle that the player should keep in mind:

  • Alex has an extended execution animation when attacking Thugs (compared to Tony, who first knocks down Thugs before the player chooses to execute them).
  • Overall, Alex has longer executions than Tony.
  • Alex and Ash's movement is also slower than Tony's.
    • Counterbalancing this, Ash fires semi-automatic and pump-action weapons faster than other characters.

On a PC, Alex's attacks are controlled with the left mouse button while Ash's attacks are controlled with the right mouse. Alex never changes her weapon, while Ash begins each level with a pistol and automatically picks up any weapon that he walks over once his ammo is depleted.

When playing as the Swans, Alex will be the only one to die even if both of them are fatally hit, requiring the player to restart the floor. Once Alex is killed, Ash surrenders by putting his hands up, and will be ignored by enemies.

List of killed victims[]

This is a compiled list of how many kills Alex has performed in the series. Kills in Bold are unclear and up to interpretation. This assumes Alex is used for every one of the Fans' missions:

Overall, Alex has killed 142 enemies (143 if you count Blue Lips). All of Alex's kills are shared with Ash.

Trivia[]

  • Alex is the only one of The Fans that is seen without a mask in the main game.
    • Her face is also a color swap of the Henchman's girlfriend, Mary.
  • Alex is the only Fan whose personal residence is shown (in the intro of Dead Ahead), which she apparently shared with her brother until they separated at some point. This also makes her the only Fan that the player takes control of outside of the Fans' scenes.
    • Near the front door are a pair of shoes that may be wet from the sewers in Into the Pit (which may also be why Alex was bathing in this scene).
      • There is a black-and-white poster for the band Frodus on the floor near the entrance.
    • The bedroom is the largest area, with several socks, bras, and other clothing scattered around the floor. The full laundry hamper is located by the full-sized bed that has purple pillows and a blanket, paired with a torn white bedsheet displaying several holes. Moreover, there are two desks on each side of the room.
      • The desk close to the bed appears to have a tape recorder, a red handbag, a piano keyboard, a pizza box, a pizza slice, and an overflowing ashtray by the floor.
      • The desk closer to the door appears to have a speaker system, floppy drives, an open book, and several notes. Notably, this desk is tidier and cleaner and does not have a chair unlike the other desk, suggesting that this may have been used by Ash.
    • The spacious walk-in closet adjacent to the bedroom has two boxes of marijuana plants, three racks of clothing, a table stand, and a drawer. Strewn on the floor are three bloodied white shirts, two printed shirts, and a pair of green pants and blue pants.
    • The living area has a large black L-shape couch with a torn cushion, a TV dinner tray, and a yellowish throw with red markings. In front is a large TV display with a bong and houseplant on the top shelf. A tattered orange and black armchair is pushed up against the window next to the couch. A wine bottle lies on the floor.
    • The kitchen has an island with a sink and stovetop, where a pizza box sits. On the counter is a newspaper open to a page covering the Fans' vigilante activities. A wine bottle and miscellaneous items are visible on the floor.
    • The bathroom has a bright green shower curtain and a magazine on the floor.
  • Alex is one of the most assertive and bellicose among the Fans in craving violence, much like Tony. Her chainsaw implies that she has the most interest in creating gore.
  • Alex also enjoys completing missions to acquire more drugs, as all of the missions completed by the Fans that are proposed by Ash or herself are related to drugs. She smokes marijuana (as seen in Moving Up) and has several weed plants growing in her home in Dead Ahead, though she may also be interested in other drugs. There are other instances highlighting her drug use:
    • In the intro of Into the Pit, there are several weed plants around the Fan's hideout, likely placed there by Alex.
    • The top floor in the bar of Execution is filled with marijuana plants and cocaine, where she may have pillaged some.
  • Her interest in recreational marijuana may also correspond with the psychedelic Hotline Miami tracks from Sun Araw.
  • CongaArms

Arms as big as Tony's. What kind of gear is in that backpack exactly?

Alex's muscles are visibly large when wielding her chainsaw, making her the only female character in the game series that has bare arms stronger than or equal to her masculine counterparts.
    • Despite this, she is given the default female NPC model with essentially no arms in the intro of Dead Ahead.
      • This could imply that she is only muscular in comparison to Ash (who has arms considerably smaller than most males), or that she is vulnerable in Dead Ahead.
      • These inconsistencies may also be due to the creators reusing the default male/female sprite templates, as the hands on Alex's sprite in Dead Ahead intro are noticeably thinner and smaller like a regular female character, compared to the hands of her sprite when she is dressed in her Swan outfit.
  • Alex and Ash's orange and green apparel could be a reference to the orange and green facial/phone sprite void in the original game, as they have the most connections and proposed all of the Fans' missions (except in Down Under).
  • In the digital comics, Alex and Ash are distinguishable by the number on their shoulder pads, while in the game they are distinguishable via the number painted on their mask.
  • Alex and Corey are the only playable female characters in the game series.
  • In the digital comics, Alex appears to be jealous of Tony as the other Fans others show more respect towards his ideas. In the game, Tony never suggests jobs for the Fans, which are nearly all proposed by Ash and Alex.
  • Alex is the only character that executes enemies that are knocked against walls with a weapon.
  • She and Biker are the only player characters who can execute Thug type enemies from a standing position.
  • Alex is the only playable character in the entire series who is never shown as seated; all of her sprites in recreational situations also depict her as standing.
  • In the military tiki bar of Ambush, Alex and Jacket are the only ones smoking while standing and facing away from the bar.
    • Alex is also the only character (other than Jacket or Manny Pardo) that is shown smoking a cigarette; it is also the only instance she does in-game.
  • In the intro for First Trial, Alex and Ash protest next to a small blonde girl - it is unknown if she is a relative or acquaintance, or someone entirely unlinked to them.
Magazineadult

Alex standing in front of the adult magazine.

  • In the intro of Dead Ahead, an adult magazine containing erotic images of women lie on the bathroom floor in front of her, implying that she may be interested in women. However, the assets are randomized, so generic magazines and newspapers also spawn in its place.

Alex's corpse is seen with three bullet wounds during the table sequence.

  • In the Table Sequence, Alex's corpse is shown to have three bullet wounds on the chest after Richard is finished speaking to Tony, despite being shot once. This is likely a sprite oversight.
